On Monday, Jagdeep Dhankhar officially resigned from his position as the Vice President of India. He submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, stating that health issues were the reason behind his decision. In the letter, he mentioned that he was stepping down with immediate effect as per Article 67(a) of the Constitution. He wrote, “In order to focus on my health and follow medical advice, I resign from the office of Vice President of India, effective immediately.
Dhankhar expressed that it had been a great privilege to serve the country during a time of rapid economic growth and significant development. He shared that witnessing India’s transformation and being part of that journey gave him a deep sense of pride and fulfillment. Calling it an “honour,” he reflected on his time in office with gratitude.
According to constitutional rules, a new Vice President must be elected within 60 days of the resignation. Members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will vote using a proportional representation system, specifically the single transferable vote method.
While the position remains vacant, the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha will take over as Acting Chairperson. At present, that role is held by Harivansh Narayan Singh, who was appointed in August 2022. He will carry out the duties of the Vice President in the Upper House until a new Vice President is elected.
